Welcome to The Company of The Phoenix

The Company of The Phoenix is a medieval living history group based in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. We formed in 2002 with the purpose of recreating the High Medieval period of European History as accurately as possible, whilst having an immense amount of fun doing so.

As a historical framework, we decided to use the concept of a Free Company, somewhere in Europe during the years 1400 - 1475. This allows members to portray a wide variety of people (personas) - from Noble Ladies and merchants, tradesmen and archers, to men-at-arms and knights, tavern keepers and gunners.

In early 2003 we expanded this, to have the Free Company encamped near a village, allowing members to represent local merchants and nobility, as well as travelers such as pilgrims. All members meticulously research their costumes and equipment, using primary sources as far as possible (manuscripts, paintings, archaeological finds and so on),and then re-create them as close to the original as modern life allows. During our performances, everything you see in our encampment could be seen in a medieval village or camp, from the cooking and eating utensils, to the food and costumes, and the arms and armour.

The Company of the Phoenix is a very sociable group, running not only public events, but also events and social occasions for the group members.  We are very family oriented, and have several children, from toddlers to young adults who perform with us, along with their parents. We perform at large medieval fairs, such The Abbey Tournament, and History Alive, as well as much smaller events, such as school fairs and corporate functions, and weddings.  We are also available for educational seminars and experiences, particularly for schools who are covering medieval history as part of their curriculum.  Many of our members are also experienced in film and video work, and the group can supply both extras and props for producers at reasonable rates.

Please be aware though, this is our hobby, not our job. We are a not for profit group - which means we all have real jobs to pay for all this gear, so if you want to hire us, most weekdays are a little difficult to accommodate.

Performance Etiquette

Humble

Show season is upon us once again, and with the number of new members performing with Phoenix at their first major event, I thought it would be a good idea to touch on some of the basics of performance etiquette - or “How to Address People 101”.

The Company of the Phoenix have a number of different performances and activities which we can utilise in an event.

Function Entertainment

Phoenix can provide a variety of entertainment to take place during your function, including singing, poetry, music, dancing, knighting ceremonies and comedy, historical displays, educational talks or even steel combat fighting.

If you are looking at booking Phoenix, you can use the descriptions below as a rough guide as to what choices you can make in customising your show.
